How I Score Reviews, and What a 7 Really Means

The scale runs from 0 to 10 in half steps. Here's what each band means, so a score tells you something before you read a word.

A score is a summary and not the review. But a summary only helps if it means the same thing every time, so this is what the numbers mean here.

The bands

Score What it means
9 to 10 Best in its class. Easy to recommend to nearly anyone.
8 to 8.5 Great, with a flaw or two you should know about.
7 to 7.5 Good. Worth it at the right price or for the right person.
5 to 6.5 Fine, but better options exist for most people.
Below 5 Hard to recommend, and I’ll say exactly why.

What I don’t do

  • No scores for pay. Paid posts are labelled as ads, and they’re never reviews.
  • No scores from a spec sheet. If I haven’t used it, it doesn’t get a number.
  • No hiding review units. If a company sent it, the review says so.
